Carp fishing float
So many carp fishermen use static configurations in these days you could be forgiven for thinking that float fishing for carp big is a lost art, really amazing as it may be one of the most adrenaline filled with large fish about once objectives has been!
I have heard of many carp fishermen who are bored with the current trend of fixed fishing set-up to extreme lengths in some cases even casting a rod, but using live bait to send a lead and hookbait to some distant place – no wonder that the heart has stopped pumping – which in itself alone would be enough to make me sleep! All I want to tell the fishermen to break with a float rod and having a good time!
As methods go, who do not get much simpler – all you need is a float and a hook! Forget your bite detectors, pods of the bar, swingers and things like that – this is appropriate fishing designed to put your heart in your mouth every time the float contractions! My floating fishing rules set for big carp is composed of a bar action of the tent of about 1.5 pounds to 2 pounds light curve test, which provides exciting sport when playing fish close, twinned with a slight side reel – No need for big pit reels or baitrunners – if you have a drag facility allows you to adjust the tension during the battle that will have no problem. Spool up with a quality monofilament line, my personal choice is Daiwa sensor. The tensile strength depends on the water are fishing, and if free of setbacks, weeds and other underwater obstacles can use a smaller diameter, say between 8 pounds and 10 pounds, or increased to 12 pounds or more if conditions require.
Again, personally, I like to keep things light as this increases the enjoyment factor when playing near the fish, so most of the time I use 10 pounds or less. There are a number of floats for carp fishing, but to be honest I only have about five different types in my box of stuff that I think I covered for all eventualities. To create a standard float fishing I like to use a float weighted own tent, not only does this save time to establish but it means you can change and change easily when faced with a different distance, instead of having to take off or apply different line every time you change the distance and depth.
As most of my carp fishing float carries out stalking fashion I’m never going to be huge cast distances are more likely to simply drop the float out to the marginal features such as weedbeds, lilies or cattails at the margins. As such I only need sufficient weight to bring the float a few feet so a pre-weighted float is perfect for snapping hookbait. If you want to appeal to the carp on the drop or if I am fishing for spooky carp I will not add to the firing line at all, but if I want to get the bait on the bottom of the lake quickly I will add a little injection or a piece of rig-putty about three inches from the hookbait so you can reach the bottom quickly.
Hook size is critical because you need to match the hook size hookbait. Too many fishermen think you need big hooks to the tent of the bank, that is simply not the case. Most of my stalking and surface fishing for carp is with hooks between size 12 and 16 and almost never lose a fish, because pulling the hook! You really do not need hair-platforms, just mount your bait on the hook and you’re done! Just remember to bring a mat release so you can do against a big fish safely in the bank.
Try fish to the obvious features where carp can visit and keep a small trickle loosefeed “and often” basis in order to get your attention when they do come. My personal preference is some bait that moves, something that for carp in its tracks when it passes by – and, as such, usually for larvae or worms.
It really is as simple as that, the adrenalin rush to see the slide to float before having to bend the rod can not be beaten and I can assure you’ll never be bored again! I have recently bagged numerous pieces on the methods and tactics described above. So why not go out and do the same.
